COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) - Law enforcement officials say Georgia has a gang crisis.

The FBI says criminal street gangs are responsible for an average of 48 percent of violent crimes in a majority of jurisdictions and up to 90 percent in others.

The President of the Georgia Gang Investigators Association told CBS46 reporter Aiyana Cristal they conducted a statewide survey which shows there are over 71,000 gang members or associates across the state.

And the GGIA says the problem is getting worse.

"We all have a need to belong to something to have someone love them and tell them they belong here your needed here and a lot these kids come from broken families, parents have to works so the kids are on the streets and they gravitate toward that whole sense of belonging," said Chief James Callaway.

Callaway who has been investigating gangs for decades says these gang members are starting out as young as 10 years old.

Officials tell CBS46 155 out of 159 counties in the state are seeing some form of gang activity, one of those counties is Cobb County.
