Founder: Walter Wheat alias: "King Wheat"

The Four Corner Hustlers were founded in about 1967 or 1968 by four individuals: "King" Walter Wheat, Freddy "Malik" Gauge, Monroe "Money" Banks, and Richard "Lefthand" Goodman. Wheat (who was previously a member of the Vice Lords) is considered the gangs official founder, with Gauge serving as his “right hand man.” The gang formed in the West Garfield Park neighborhood in the vicinity of Madison and Pulaski. The gangs original colors were brown and black and they hung at Delano school and their territory encompassed Madison to Jackson, Pulaski to Independence. They initially partook in petty theft and vandalism but had strict rules not to victimize community members. Upon taking on the Apache Vice Lords (led by Benny Lee, who would eventually become the Insane Vice Lords) they flipped Vice Lord, adopting that gang's colors and symbols.

The gang operated as a small group in the Garfield Park neighborhood throughout the late 1960's, and throughout the 1970s, often fighting area clubs and engaging in petty theft and vandalism. Their main source of income at the time was robbery, and they where known for ripping off freight trains and trucks. Later they would expand to other parts of the west side such as Austin. When the 1980s were ushered in, the crack epidemic hit the streets, and many 4CH members began to partake in drug dealing. Violence became widespread, even amongst Hustler members, and hundreds of them were killed or incarcerated. The turmoil angered Wheat, who was said to be a more classic organization member, and he constantly dealt with subordination within his ranks.

In the mid-80s, a group of Four Corner Hustlers began to operate in the Garfield Park and Austin led by Monroe "Money" Banks; this group adopted the “Black Diamond” as a symbolic reference to their gang and sold millions of dollars worth of narcotics, which began to establish a reputation for the Four Corner Hustler outside the of the west side. In the late 1980's, Freddy Gauge died while incarcerated (Gage’s elaborate funeral drew over 5,000 mourners. Gauge , at age 29, died while drinking moonshine booze the night before he was to be released from the Menard state prison, where he had been jailed for shooting a police officer on Valentine’s Day, 1972. ) Walter Wheat then took over the organization’s operations solely. However, in the early 1990's, Monroe Banks proclaimed leadership over the entire organization though this was disputed by some older, high-ranking members of the gang. The tension and disagreements within the gang lead Walter Wheat to retire from the organization’s leadership. Monroe Banks was later killed in a drug related murder in 1992. The 4CH's began to expand their bases of operation throughout the 1990's, growing substantially in number. A group of younger Four Corner Hustlers began to distance themselves from the Vice Lords and even rest away some of their territory, often times "flipping" Vice Lord members with the lure of drug spots. These Four Corner Hustlers charged a 50 percent tax on profit for the selling of narcotics as opposed to the traditional 75 percent. Many of these Four Corner Hustlers, whose main base of operation was in Austin and Garfield Park neighborhoods also used the Black Diamond.

Amongst one of t the "Young Turks" was Angelo Roberts who had been chief of the Henry Horner Homes 4CHs.. Angelo Roberts was given a leadership position in the organization by Walter Wheat due to his relationship with Wheat’s daughter, despite his young age. As such, disputes for leadership positions continued. Due to turmoil in leadership, Walter Wheat reassumed his position in the organization. This would prove to be a bad decision as Wheat was killed in 1993; Angelo Roberts was the principle suspect in orchestrating the hit. He also allegedly arranged the hit of one of the founders, Richard "Lefthand" Goodman. Roberts was arrested on drugs and weapons charges in the mid 1990's. After release, he attempted to blow up the Area 4 Police (Harrison District) station with LAWS anti-tank rockets. The Feds were in on the plot all along, as they secured the straw seller, a member of the Black Souls, with pictures of the rockets and wire tapped conversations between he and Roberts, while the latter was incarcerated. After release, Roberts was about to purchase the weapons, when he sensed something fishy, and thus didn’t meet in person with the Federal informant. He eluded capture from authorities for weeks and even made America's Most Wanted as they pursued him across the United States. One of Roberts’ hideouts was in Atlanta, Georgia, where he established a group of Four Corner Hustlers loyal to him. Angelo Roberts was killed in 1995, his body found frozen stiff in the trunk of a car. Several sets still pay homage to Angelo Roberts, adopting the moniker "Angelo 4's".

Ray Longstreet assumed leadership of the official branch of Four Corner Hustler around the time of Angelo Roberts’ death. His group still considers themselves a faction of the Vice Lords street gang, especially while in the correctional facilities. Ray Longstreet was released from prison in 2004 after serving a stint for drug charges. He was later arrested again, this time by Federal authorities in "Operation Street Sweeper" for operating a drug distribution network, in which authorities claimed his territory encompassed West Division Street, from Austin to Ridgeway –quite a chuck of territory. The Four Corner Hustlers pride themselves in making money. The organization has grown tremendously within the last fifteen years or so, and they have expanded throughout the south side and far south suburbs as well as many out-of-state chapters. In fact, they outnumber the Conservative Vice Lords in membership. The 4CH's are an off-shoot of the Vice Lords, however, on the streets most Four Corner Hustlers now consider themselves a separate “nation.” However, all 4CH's align themselves with the Vice Lords while incarcerated forgoing any "street animosity.”

Bases of Operation: the 4CHs are one of the largest gangs in Chicago, and dominate the Austin neighborhood. They also have a strong membership within West Garfield Park and Humboldt Park, and even Lawndale. They once had a major influence in the Henry Horner Homes until those projects were tore down in the mid-2000s, as well as Rockwell Gardens, which were demolished as well. The gang controls the Division street corridor from Austin to Ridgeway, spanning Austin and Humboldt Park neighborhoods. In the late 80s, they began to set up shop on the south side, establishing a presence in Burnside, Calumet Heights, Woodlawn/Jackson Park, West Pullman, Roseland, and even had a presence in the Robert Taylor Homes. They also operate on the north side in Uptown, Belmont-Cragin and Portage Park. Some major high schools are Austin H.S., Flower H.S., Proviso East H.S., Douglas H.S., Fenger H.S., Taft H.S., West Side Alternative H.S. and Crane H.S. Some of major suburban influences include Calumet Park, Ford Heights, Chicago Heights, and Rock Island. Throughout the 90s, the group expanded to several sattelite states throughout the U.S.

Culture/Method of Operation: Four Corner Hustlers refer to each other as "4" or "Solid." "Solid" is a major concept within the nation, meaning solidarity. They abide by four "points," which are Love, Hate, Kill, Take. Some popular 4CH slogans are "If you ain't Solid, don't holla it," "4 world," and "Focus or fold." As stated, 4CH's are Vice Lords within the correctional facilities but within the gang exists a mentality that they are separate from Vice Lords due to the fact that the gang is large enough by itself to be defined as a "Class 3" criminal enterprise, and the fact that they didn't originally start as Vice Lords.

Being one the more “flashier” gangs, many members wear expensive clothing or "gear" such as Coolgi sweaters, Pelle Pelle leather jackets, polo shirts, kango and dabs hats, etc. Some, however, are more street oriented and wear popular hip-hop/urban fashion such as Fubu, Sean Jean, and Nike. Throughout the 1990s, the 4's were also known for wearing (original) Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies baseball caps and an inordinate amount of members had "perms." Today, members have fades, braids, wavey or curly small "naturals." However, there are of course some more "grittier" members, who don't concern themselves with fashion, as in all gangs.

The 4CHs' hand sign is the simple extension of four fingers; members "shake up" by interlocking the thumb while raising the four fingers, then (sometimes) dropping the pitchforks. The gang's primary colors are Black (race) and Gold (wealth). However, most 4Chs concern themselves with colors and consider it to be "play out." Also, as with VLs, there exists controversy over the color "red" being a "war color" in official gang literature. The gang has been known to wear red when "riding with" Black P. Stones back in the mid-90s.

The gang can engage in hostilities or befriend just about any group, as their primary focus has been on making money, and not gangbanging. Many 4CHs share sets with CVLs, for example. They've even shared a set with the Latin Kings in Humboldt Park. They are also tight with the Traveling Vice Lords, as both groups abide by the "solid" concept. However, there has been discord with the Mafia Insane Vice Lords in the past. Similarly they have been known to engage in war with certain Black P. Stone and Mickey Cobras sets. The 4CHs's main enemy has traditionally been the Gangster Disciples; these gangs are known to feud in the "wild 100's," as well as Henry Horner Homes, Marquette Park, and Woodlawn/Jackson Park. Nevertheless, there have been instances of long standing peace accords between the two groups, in areas such as Burnside and Calumet Heights. A Spanish faction of the gang is known for wars with the Latin Pachucos, Maniac Latin Disciples, and Insane Deuces. One of the more interesting relationships is the 4CHs and the Black Souls and New Breeds, respectively. The Souls and Fours have been traditionally allied, indeed, both sharing black diamond concepts and similar history. However, there have been recent altercations between certain factions of the 4's and the mad Black Souls in West Garfield Park. The New Breeds on the other hand, seem to have a working relationship, they have been no "major" wars between the two groups, and in fact, they were working together as Operation Street Sweeper revealed, apparently, the Breeds were renting drug territory from Ray Longstreet.

The gang has been depicted in popular media such as the History Channel series "Gangland" and the AsIs documentary "Friend or Foe: the Angelo Roberts Story." Hip-hop artists said to be affilliated with the 4 Corner Hustlers are Kilo (of Crucial Conflict), Speedknot Mobstaz, Bumpy Johnson, and Common.

The gang’s primary criminal involvement has consisted of graffiti, drug trafficking, assault, armed robbery, extortion, kidnapping, shootings, murder, and the "renting out" of drug turf to independent dealers. The organization has also been known to engage in the overseeing of solicitation of prostitution (pimping), the selling of illegal firearms, and the opening of "front" businesses to launder money

Iconography: The Four Corner Hustlers symbols are all adopted from the Vice Lords, and include the cane (strength), tophat (shelter), dice (hustling), dollar sign( money), playboy bunny (swiftness), martini glass (celebration), and white gloves (purity). However, what makes the 4CHs unique, give the gangs its “own identity,” and has been a source of contention, is the black diamond. Most contend that the “b.d.” was adopted from Mad Black Souls, who had used that symbol for years. The founder of the Black Souls was a cousin to Walter Wheat, so the gangs had a relationship from the start. However, under the leadership of Monroe Banks, the two groups formed a stronger bond. According to sources, one of Banks underbosses, “Hodari Joe,” suggested the gang use the black diamond as a “tester” to ingrain into the soldiers’ mind that the 4CHN was a separate nation from the Vice Lords. After Banks’ death, many leaders scrambled to position themselves as candidates for leadership of the entire gang. As stated, among them was Angelo Roberts, who led the Henry Horner Homes 4CHs. Under “Lo”, the b.d. concept became increasingly popular and in fact, the main symbol for the gang. By the late 90s, many 4’s were claiming they were “no longer VLs” and decided not to “tag” the five pointed star (however, the black diamond was never meant to “replace” the “5”) which cause confusion. The “4 points of the diamond” became “love, hate, kill, take,” which was never officially codified (the 4CH to this day don’t have an “official literature”, they abide by VL lit) but became prominent on the streets.

Hierarchy: The following Four Corner Hustlers hold the rank of Five Star Universal Chief Elite: Reginald "Akkeem" Berry (Almighty Mafioso Four Corner Hustlers), Shawn “Shakey Shawn” Betts (Almighty Body Snatcher Four Corner Hustlers), Darnell “Cinque” Bryant (Almighty Black Insane Four Corner Hustlers), Morris Ledell “Hodari Joe” Carr (Almighty Angelo Maniac Four Corner Hustlers), Larry Ford (Almighty L.T. Four Corner Hustlers), Curtis “Noon” Henderson (Almighty Millineium Four Corner Hustlers), Raymond “Ray Ray” Longstreet (Almighty Ray Ray Macative Four Corner Hustlers), Jerome “Head” Murray (Almighty Goon Squad Four Corner Hustlers), Rufus “Weasel” Simms (Almighty Sniper Four Corner Hustlers), and John “Peanut” Walton (Almighty Barnone Four Corner Hustlers). These individuals have supreme authority within their “structures.” They may make up a council which rules over the entire 4CHN. Other top 4CH's are: Willie "Fast Black" Mcneal, Tushawn Robinson, and Frederick "Lil Fred" Four Corner Hustler rankings include the Council, Supreme Minister, Minister of Justice, Minister of Exterior, Minister of the Interior, Minister of Finance, Minister of Vanguard, Minister of Command and Communications, Minister of Literature, and Minister of Secretarial.
