A Bronx judge closed her courtroom Monday so that a terrified witness who was shot and beaten last week could testify in a gang-related murder case.

Prosecutors believe cronies of accused killer Brandin Santiago may have been involved in the attacks on witness Theodore Edwards, sources said.

Santiago, a reputed member of the Crips-linked 280s crew, is charged with killing innocent bystander Nadairee Walters, 17, and wounding two young men at a Nov. 2008 party in Morris Heights.

Pals of Santiago have flashed gang signs in the courtroom and intimidated witnesses and victim's family members throughout the trial, sources said.

"There have been problems in the audience," prosecutor Nancy Borko said in her request to close the courtroom.

"Gang signs have been thrown at witnesses. This was a witness who has been beaten up and shot at last week."

Edwards has received threatening letters from Santiago, who was with him the night of his arrest, sources said.

Edwards did not want to take the stand, but was being held on an open warrant and forced to testify, a relative said.

"They're already shooting at him," she said. "He doesn't want to do this."

Judge Ann Donnelly sealed the courtroom for about 20 minutes, then opened it after objections from reporters.

She will rule Tuesday on whether reporters can be present for the rest of Edwards' testimony.
