Historical Development: The Simon City Royals were once the largest predominantly Caucasian street gang in Chicago, and quite possibly America. The Royals possibly originated in the Lakeview neighborhood in the vicinity of Irving Park & Ashland when two pre-existing gangs combined forces to create a new unity, or "nation." It is theorized by some that the merger actually occurred sometime in the 1960s (c.1968) when the leader of Simon City, Michael Kraft, fought a leading member of the Royals, (also known as "Ashland" Royals) and lost, with the result being that the two gangs merged into one. The gang was the known as Simon City's Angry Royals, soon to be shortened to Simon City Royals. However, this is yet to be corroborated and there exists a variant origin. National Gang Crime Research Center (NGCRC) provides a profile analysis on the Latin Kings, in which it lists the Simon City Royals as a gang that received social workers through the YMCA in the year 1960, which if correct, indicates that the merger occurred before or in 1960. The Simon City gang operated mainly in the area of Almira Simons Park in the vicinity of Drake & Wabansia (1640 N Drake) in Humboldt Park on Chicago's west side. After the merger took place, the Simon City group in-fact operated independently and did not embrace the "Royals" concept for years to come. There is evidence that they had at least on other set (at Koz Park) during the 1960s, when the Simon City Royals entity was in full swing. In 1965, the Chicago Tribune covers a story where a member of the Simon-City gang, Paul Sander, shoots a member of the rival Sceptors, so we know that the Simon City was still around in the mid-1960s, and probably started in the early 1950s. In Humboldt Park, this group fought such gangs as the Jokers, Drakers, Latin Kings, Imperial Gangsters, and Bel Airs.

During the 1960's the Royals grew at a rapid pace in the Lakeview neighborhood under the leadership of Rasher "Arab" Zayed. However, by the early 1970's the Royals were beginning to experience gang turf wars and a recruitment drought. This lead some members of the Royals to assert themselves in other near-by neighborhood locations. In result this motion established a main section for the Simon City Royals based at the intersection of Paulina & Cornelia. In 1973 the Simon City Royals gathered smaller area gangs to form an inner-alliance known as the "Northside Aces". This group would consist of various small corner gangs in the area. A few younger members of the Simon City Royals were chosen to shift their membership to the Aces to help build a solid foundation for the group. This groups colors were Royal Blue & Gold. The alliance would add support to the Royals recruitment and expansion. Soon after this, the Deuces street gang initiated a shooting towards members of the group, which also terminated a short "peace treaty" between the Simon City Royals and Deuces. Due to this, the Northside Aces basically absorbed into members of the Simon City Royals Nation themselves. The president of the Royals, Arab, and another high-ranking member, “Tuffy,” were killed in 1973 and 1974, respectively, allegedly by the Insane Deuces. A Chicago Tribune article reads: “Rasher Zayed of 3469 N Clark St, reputed leader of the Simon City Royals, was shot Wednesday allegedly in a territorial dispute with the Deuces street gang, police said. Charged with his murder were Edward Bartnicki 17, of 2955 N Damen and Gary Chavarria of 2062 N Damen, also a 16, was charged.” Both assailants were members of the Insane Deuces. In 1974 the Simon City Royals engaged in many battles with other rival gangs, such as the Latin Eagles, and shootings began to be more common Despite the turmoil, by this time the Simon Cty Royals were also well known and went on to expand and grow outside of the Lakeview neighborhood.

A new section emerged in Albany Park on the corner of Lawrence & Kimball around Roosevelt High School. This group of SCR's would later become the Royals of Leland & St.Louis where most of their members would congregate. A Simon City Royal formerly from Paulina & Cornelia known as "Bimbo," who was Tuffy's older brother, stepped up to claim leadership for the Leland & St.Louis Royals. Bimbo was said to be a very successful recruiter, who was a very well known soldier on the streets. Bimbo was also modestly successful in squashing conflicts among other feuding White organizations in the area. However, in 1975 the shooting death of Bimbo was claimed by members of the Latin Kings street gang. Without Bimbo acting a peaceful catalyst, some relationships among members and other sides began to crumble and old views were expressed. In the early 1970s the Simon City Royals unified with several white street gangs such as the Gaylords, Insane Popes, and the Howard street Greasers, and opposed the growing populations of the Latino street gangs. Tensions also heated up with such gangs as the Latin Kings, Insane Deuces, and the Latin Eagles. In the mid 70s (around 1975) the Gaylords killed Larry “Larkin” Morris ,the leader of the Insane Popes which caused the Popes to establish a unity with the Royals called the “Royal-Popes Nation.” Right before this occurred the Royals had killed a Gaylord named “Wizard” at a party. This caused a massive war with the Gaylords that became real sour real fast. By this time many Royals had been incarcerated in the prison systems and learned how to establish operations in prison like many other Chicago gangs were doing by then. There was members of the Simon City Royals who broke away and decided to commence their own unsanctioned sets in other area's of the city such as Logan Square, Lincoln Park, Rogers Park, and various Chicagoland suburbs. Many of these Royals that broke away and take roles as leaders were lacking the street skills and knowledge it actually took to be a successful leader. The "old Royals" were mostly gone. To make a known presence of themselves, members from these area's would initiate in gang fights that were unecessary and for the name sake. By the end of 1975 these sections successfully alienated their allies and friends, and the Simon City Royals as a whole nation were at war with most. Throughout parts of the 1970's the Simon City Royals fought with several street gangs including the Latin Kings, Gaylords, Insane Deuces, Latin Eagles, Imperial Gangsters, and Insane Unknowns. In Lincoln Park, the SCR's fought a vicious war againsdt the Insane Unknowns. The Royals killed Insane Unknown leader "Capone." In retaliation, the Unknowns killed the Fullerton & Southport (Lincoln Park) leader, Darryl "Bulldog" Griggs. As a result, they were forced to abandon this stronghold by the early 1980s. Edwin "Weso" Suarez, leader of the Wrightwood Street IUK's, was found guilty of the murder.

By 1977, the Simon City Royals were experiencing many changes in their organization. As time went on older sections had faded away and some of the newer sections were growing well paced. The Simon City Royals original street principles were vanishing and the minor operations of the gang were becoming more in depth. Drug dealing and burglary became full time activities. Carrying a gun on the streets was usually done by a selected few on occasions, but since had become a common role in everyday life for members. Due to these consistent crimes, many members of the SCR's were incarcerated. The Simon City Royals then started to develop structure within the prison systems through-out the United States. However by 1980, the majority of "oldschool" members were either incarcerated, dead, or retired and had left the gang lifestyle. The original ideology and principles of the Simon City Royals had faded. At this point there were very few Simon City Royals members that had real ties to their predecessors from the late 1960's and 1970's. The Simon City Royals were a principle founder of the Folks alliance in 1978. This created new allies for the Royals on the north side such as the Spanish Cobras, Orchestra Albany, Latin Disciples, Imperial Gangsters, and yes even the Latin Eagles. Due to the structure the Simon City Royals held in the prison systems the Black Gangster Disciples offered the Simon City Royals protection within the correctional facilities for exchange in firearms on the streets. A gang meeting at a warehouse on the south side between the two mobs was interupted by police; at the meeting the transaction of guns was said to have taken place. In the 1980's the Simon City Royals and Latin Kings fought one of the fiercest gang wars to date in the Albany Park neighborhood. In the early 1980's under the leadership of the Brewer Brothers (Toddy "Dillenger" Brewer and Mike Brewer), the Simon City Royals started to operate in the on the corner of Central Park & Wilson. which wuld become the gang's new headquarters. They were forced to move further west after intense shootings and fights against the Kings and P.R. Future Stones. The gangs main source of income was theft and robbery at the time. In fact, they made the newspapers several times due to their strong armed burglary escapades. Later on, Dillenger was killed by the P.R. Future Stones (now Familia Stones).

Another major loss to the Royals was the territory encompassing Kozcisuco Park (Koz Park). This had been a Simon-City sotringhold throuhgout the 1960s and by the mid-1970s, this particular group finally allowed themselves to be absorbed into the Simon City Royals. They were known for engaging in brawls, grafitti, theft and robbery. Throughout the 1980s the area was flooded with latino immigration and member of the Puerto Ricans became members of the Spanish Cobras. Since both the Royals and Cobras were Folks, they existed friendship between the two gangs. However, by the late 80/s, the Cobras had complete control of the Diversry Street corridor as well as other spots (such as Wolfram & Drake). The Royals were eventually only left with School & Avers and Wellington & Christiania in Logan Square, and many of tehm felt bitter that the territory was basically "given up" without a fight. The Latin Disciples also made inroads on Royals territory, taking strongholds such as Fletcher & California. Additionally, Humboldt Park motherland was long gone, as the Latin Kings had forced the gang from Simon's Park in the 1960s . To add to their woes, most of Lakeview had been gentrified, so the gang could no longer operated within the area and there was a "renegade" group who adopted a white power organization (WPO) stance who started on Brwn Mawr & Harlem.

In the wake of Brewers death, his older brother, Mike retired from gang life. Agim Hotza, the Fender brothers (Frank "Fats" Fender and William "Billy" Fender), Gregory "Riff Raff" Behzad, Bobby "Thief" Price, David "Lil Man" Attiles and Patrick Saunders would soon position themselves as candidates for leadership of the entire organization. Eventually, by the late 1980's, Agim Hotza established a firm hold on the organization. The gang experienced a growth under Hotza and began to get politically involved in the city, ensuring property and city jobs for members of the organization. However, the gang started to unravel a bit in the late 1980's. Hotza was incarcerated in 1989, leaving his under-boss, Frank "Fats" Fender to run the street operations. Fats was said to brutally enforce gang laws and angered many high-ranking members of the organization due to his strongman tactics. Fats was then incarcerated on drug charges in 1991. When Agim Hotza was released, he found the Simon City Royals organization in disarray. Many of the gangs strongholds had been lost to rival gangs or "yuppies" (through gentrification), and there existed subordination within the hierarchy of the gang. Agim Hotza retired from position in the Simon City Royals in 1995. Frank "Fats" Fender now released from jail objected to leave the state, thus leaving control of the gang to Brian "Mouse" Nelson. Mouse, incarcerated at the time ran the operations of the Simon City Royals on the inside. Mouse now resides in Tamms correctional facility and is said to be mentally unstable. By the ealy 90s, however, they had begun to feud with their former allies, the Spanish Cobras and Latin Disciples. The Royals killed several Cobras and had some of their members killed in return. Out of necessity, they entered into a grouping within the Folks alliance known as the Almighty Family. This faction consists of the Royals, Imperial Gangsters, Harrison Gents, Latin Eagles and AmbroseNevertheless, the gang continues to exercise a major presence in the Albany Park, Logan Square, and Rogers Park neighborhoods. Ethnic changes and gentrification in their territory was the primary cause for the Simon City Royals decline. To maintain a solid membership of the organization the Simon City Royals today consists of many Latinos and a few black members in Chicago.

Bases of Operation: Currently, the SCR's main stronghold lay in the Albany Park neighborhood. Central Park & Wilson is considered the gang's headquarters. They also control the Irving Park Road corridor between Cicero and Kimball. The Royals also maintain a small presence in Rogers Park and also, Logan Square. As stated, much of the groups territory in Logan Square was turned over to the Spanish Cobras. The Royals have a large swathe of land in Wisconsin, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Here, there exists some renegage offshoots.

Culture/Method of Operation: Common sayings are "Almighty dont like nobody" "Cross is Boss," "Plenty Much Love (PML)" "All Is One" "TML" "NEL" Royals dress is the common attire of Hip-Hop youth as well as the blue collar nondescrpt clothing. Sweaters were a popular hallmark back in the 70s and into the 80s, however, these memorabilia are rarely worn today. Basic shoes such as Converse and Addidas are worn by some members. The handsign for the SCR's is the formation of what looks like a small "r", but it is really a cross. The index finger literally crosses the mid- finger. The gang was used identification cards, like most north side clubs; again, this is rare today.

Iconography: The main ssymbol for the Royals is the Cross. It symbolizes everything that is Christian. Two swords crossed behind the Cross, a sheild (or crest) with lions represent "royalty." A playboy bunny with bent right ear symbolized "player" but now it is indicative of swiftness. The gang also uses the 6-Pointed Star as an ally to King David (of the Disciples). They once used a pitchfork.

Factions: Hierarchy: There is dispute as to who is the current boss for the SCR. Many contend that David Shinley actually controls the mob. However, Jeff Iniguez (who is from Bryn Mawr and Spaulding, the largest chapter) actually calls the shots. There is also a theory that a man named "Zippo" has some juice. The Royals leadership structure (chain of command) goes as follows: Prince, Vice President, Governor, Chiefs, Soldiers, and Shorties. The Prince is the highest attainable rank and there exists at least one prince in each state. Sometime in the mid to late 1990's, Patrick Saunders moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and became the leader of the all SCR operations in that state. He apparently appointed himself "prince" of the Wisconsin Royals and set his own hiararchal structure, which included "first knights," "knights," . In 1997, Saunders was arrested on drug and weapons trafficking charges then had additional time added to his setnenced when he convicted soliciting murder from prison. By 1999, Michael Siegler had become the chief for the Royals, who had by this time expanded their operations all over Wisconsin. Siegler was convicted on weapons charges. While in prison he ordered his enforcers to kill a witness who had testified against him and thus, had time added to his sentence. By 2008, Anthony "Prince Shadow" Lubrano had become the ranking "prince" for all of Wisconsin. He along with 15 other Royals were indicted on Jan Bomkamp, David Shinley, Jeff Iniguez, Oscar Martinez...Kirby Tate is was on the major SCRs is the state of Mississippi and while in prison was viewed as a leader of a security threat group (STG). Thomassa "Madame" Parker, a woman, is also a major player within the Mississippi Royals and has bases located in Richland, contrlling the "tri-county" area.
