Federal sting targets Belizean Bloods gang

Suspects arrested as they allegedly plotted to rob drug cartel members in Berwyn

The plot was like something out of a TV crime drama — a small gang called the Belizean Bloods would allegedly rob more than 100 pounds of cocaine stashed in a Berwyn garage by Mexican drug cartel members.

"This is our chance, man," one Belizean immigrant is alleged to have said two days before the gang members planned to burst in on the Mexicans, killing them if necessary, before making off with the cocaine.

But instead it was all an undercover ruse, complete with recordings, set up by federal and local law enforcement. Five men with loaded guns were arrested this week as part of a multicity effort to bust the Belizean Bloods gang, which allegedly used fake U.S. passports while shipping cocaine and other narcotics from Belize to the Chicago area and several other cities.

In all, two dozen people were arrested — most of them in the Chicago area this week — and charged with drug trafficking, passport fraud and several other crimes, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald's office said.

Law enforcement sources said the gang's Chicago operations are mostly in the Rogers Park area on the city's Far North Side. But the group of likely fewer than 100 Belizean immigrants also has a presence in California, New York, Indiana, Ohio and other states.

Jerry Johnson, who allegedly oversaw the ring's operations in Chicago, was arrested Tuesday in Salt Lake City, authorities said. The investigation is continuing, they said.

In criminal complaints, authorities cited excerpts from transcripts of undercover recordings that detailed alleged drug transactions, talk of gun sales and worries over increasing police attention.

Recordings of the ruse set up in Berwyn revealed the transient gang's tendency toward violence, according to the charges.

In that case, an undercover police officer misled one of the gang's leaders, Myreon Flowers, 39, into believing that members of the Mexican La Familia drug cartel used garages in the western suburbs to transfer large quantities of powder cocaine out of the region, authorities said.

The officer pretended to be a fed-up courier for the cartel looking to rob its members of the drugs he was scheduled to deliver, authorities said.

"I don't want anybody thinking it's going to be easy, because it ain't," said the officer, warning of likely gunplay.

Flowers allegedly boasted of having killed before. Authorities said he devised an ambush that included pretending to be police officers and binding the cartel members with plastic zip ties.

"Oh, yeah, they gonna bow down, else they get laid down," Flowers was quoted as saying after he allegedly agreed to use pipes bought from Home Depot as pistol silencers.

The next day, the group met in a Cook County forest preserve near Berwyn with weapons ready, authorities said. As they prepared to carry out the plan, they were surrounded by police and arrested, federal prosecutors said.
