AMERICAS OLDEST GANG
Started in 1890 and facing injunctions to this very day Dogtown 13 is Americas oldest longest living gang. 120 years of history in the same neighborhoods they began, all modern gangs can trace their roots to the practices started by this gang.
This gang is compromised of Mexican Americans and MOST of what is modern gang history and modern gang culture can be traced directly to this gang in the Eastern part of Los Angelos.
From the style of writing gang graffiti to the "jump in" to the hand signals to the modern form of tattooing that Mexicans started all can trace their roots back to this historic gang.
This gang outlives every gang by an excess of 20+ years in most cases. Their is not a gang in America white-black-asian that can even come close to the history of this gang.
Everything Americans consider gang culture begun with this group of Mexican American teenagers. Every gang nationwide has soemthing that they got from Dogtown 13.
To this day they have a strong presence in the William Mead Housing projects and they can trace their roots back to the early 1890s, where they got their name from the local dog pound.
Most of what is considered gang life begun with this mixed group of Irish and Mexican teens. The whites moved on into mainstream society while the Mexican kids held this gang into the 20th century.
From Coast to Coast there isnt any gang that has lasted as long or even close to this gang. The most comparable would be the outlying East Los Angelos Mexican gangs such as White Fence-Hazard-Avenues-Clover-Maravillas-Gaherty-all who started in and around the very neighborhoods this gang had been in for 30 years by the time they all got their start in the 1920s.
Mainly wrongly believe gang culture began with the zootsuit but this gang had existed 60+ years before teh zootsuit was ever worn.
There is not a gang today who doesnt hold something this gang created, the writing style of the crips and bloods for example and the clothing styles of the vast majority of Americas youth.
For those who are interested in gang history and who started what first.........this gang is Americas oldest and the founder of ALL MODERN gang culture for all RACES.

Re: AMERICAS OLDEST GANG
Nice article, but how can they be the americas oldest gang when New York, Boston, Philly and Chicago had gangs since the 1830s...... on. And what did they help influence? Because New York started color banging in America (brought from europe) and Chicago added in the drive-by. Interesting thought they been around for a hot minute props they didn't flip or anything.

Gangs of New York have disintergrated. There isnt one gang from 1830s thats around today. This gang is the exact same gang-that was there in the 1890s, in the same neighborhood. Dogtown 13 was the starters of modern gang culture-the form of tattooing-dressing-khakis-white Ts-pendletons-short hair-the style of tattoos-gang graffiti they also helped create almost everything thats fashion today. They were also responsible for creating modern skater culture, since the DOGTOWN and ZBOYS became popular after copying thsi gangs style of dress and graffiti and putting it on their skateboards. Notice the ZBOYS moniker is exactly like the dogtown gangs graffiti. America didnt understand these white kids who grew up around Mexicans and didnt understand hwo they dressed and acted which is what made them so popular.
As for European gangs bringing colors. This gang is the prerequisite of every modern gang-by their dress-gang signals what they write and their form of tattooing. They are the first Sureno gang and the first modern gang. By Modern I mean -what we see as street culture today. Tattoos-chinos-khakis-they form of writing

Re: AMERICAS OLDEST GANG
As for DOGTOWN starting much of modern American fashion and what most people wear today:
Dogtown bangers were relocated into where Venice interlaps the westside. White youths picked up on their styles of dress-graffiti and begun imitating the Mexican bangers. Suicidal Tendenceies one of Americas first white alternative groups which gave rise to groups like Sublime...and many others also found the gang as their idols.....ZBOYS created the entire culture of skateboarding.....they did so because American youths found them cool. They picked up on chicano styles of dress as did most mdoern youths in America today.

Re: AMERICAS OLDEST GANG
Also -the founders of the crips and probably the first crip gang EASTSIDE CRIPS begun in the area where DOGTOWN and EASTSIDE CLOVERS are located. The original crips were known as Dogtown Crips and more then likely took their style of dress and graffiti and inkwork and lifestyle from this gang.
If we are looking for a start to modern gang culture , this is the gang who started it all. The tattooing-the dress-lowriding-the gang signaling, the stuff no New York gang had ever done.
The beginings of modern American gang culture is right here.

Guess who made the documentary MADE IN AMERICA CRIPS AND BLOODS? Zephyr skateboard founder Stacy Peralta........you know why? because he was there to witness their birth.......They started on the oustkirts of where he grew and right next to the Dogtown 13 gang. They took alot of what people consider Westcoast culture directly from thsi gang of young mexican bangers. Is it a wonder why? this gang had more history then any gang nationwide by the time the crips came around.
An Irish kid who had transplanted into Los Angelos was one of the founders of this gang ........which might explain how Mexican kids in Los Angelos begun wearing bandanas and fighting for colors.....this kid along with other discrimated against youth ( at the time Irish were not seen as whites) sought out the mexican kids and begun modern American gangster culture.
Here is William Dunes take on dogtown from his book gangs of Los Angelos
"There is no gang turf more desperately unique than that hidden among the 464 square miles which make up the City of Los Angeles. It is a fragile place; both tantalizing and repulsive, where wild fires can scorch hill-top celebrity homes as easily as gang members decimate a housing project with automatic rifle fire.
The Gangs of Los Angeles is a classic, real life account of American crime. From the early Tomato Gangs of 1890’s Boyle Heights to the modern Crips and Mara Salvatrucha, with side trips through an Irish Dogtown, the gang wars of “Happy Valley”, Sleepy Lagoon and the yellow journalism of the Hearst Press, and a tragic murder at Sunset and Vine, Dunn recounts the events and notorious denizens that spawned LA’s gang subculture.
Mexicans with input from a New york Irish youth begun modern American gangster culture. Although the form of dress of these type of gansgters was new, it was still a poor mans play on the style of Italian mafia culture (suits ) . The Dickies etc......also Mexicans inputed their cultures art and begun modern American tattoo culture......remember Cortez...upon landing in Mexico sent word to Europe (spain) that Aztecs had learned how to inplant demons onto their skin. Tattooing was heavy for Aztecs. Wouldnt it be surprising that Chicanos would tattoo themselves and wear European bandanas along with modern American workforce gear? since it was cheap? Everything about street culture today can be traced to this gang because this gang took a New yorker ( or shall we say Italian) gang culture and gave it a Mexican twist

Yeah all the independent chicago gangs got swallowed up.....into one big "nation" like GDs, Stone, Vice Lords, Kings. A Irish kid from New York huh? thats interesting. Kind of like the Saints in Chicago, was a polish gang now its mostly Mexican.

Re: AMERICAS OLDEST GANG
There are Americas oldest gang.Period. There is not a gang thats active today with a quarter of the history of this gang. MOST of what constitutes American banging started with this group.
Los Angelos Oldest gang by FAR, the only other gang that come close are 30 years YOUNGER.
They are Americas oldest longest living gang. There are no gangs in New york that have lasted as long, the vast majority have died off or were adapted into Italian Mafia families.
Everything tahts street today started witrh this group

Re: AMERICAS OLDEST GANG
May- The are the oldest living gang I give them hella props for that. Its actually quite insane, so much history. The thing with New York and Chicago gangs is they merged into the mega gangs we have today as I said before like the Gangster Disciples, Black P Stones, Vice Lords, Latin Kings, and other medium sized mobs. So the independent history of gangs in Chicago and New York is gone....now the traditions is mostly from when these super mobs were created. And I am sure this gang had some influence on gang culture, but not all of it. New York started the color banging, Chicago started the drive-by, mobs like gangs, busting hats to the left and right. 5 and 6 points starts, shags (which mexican bangers in chicago use). The tattooing is probably one of the things dogtown started and some styles of gang wear. I wonder who started graffiti though.

mark twain said "America has only three cities: New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Everywhere else is Cleveland.”
so you can't have a discussion about the oldest gangs and not mention san francisco or new orleans. in the 1800's san fran had a gang problem, look up the chinese tong wars. the tongs are considered one of the oldest secret societies to have ties to organized crime. and the mafia in america got its start in new orleans. im sure a lot of people think the american mafia started in ny or chicago, but thats not the case. anyway, just throwing in my

ok if it didn't start in new orleans, then name a mafia related incident that pre-dates the murder of police chief hennessy. according to all the things ive read, that's where the american branch of the mafia's origins lie. the term 'mafia' was introduced in a newspaper article talking about that incident.

The word " mafia" = sanctuary . The word Mafioso , is a spanish word referring to the Italianos that took refuge in the mountains back when spain took over Italia . " mafioso= REFUGES OF THE SANCTUARY"

there have been different versions circulating about the meaning of the word for many years. another common assertion is that it's an acronym (morte alla francia italia anelia - m.a.f.i.a.), in english is translated to death to the french is italy's cry. i'm not an expert in linguistics so your guess is as good as mine. you could be right. i was referring to the words origins in american parlence trace back to an article in a new orleans newspaper describing the culprits responsible for the murder of david hennessy.

The NY, Boston, Chicago gangs from the 1830's are the Organized Crime Mobs of today. They went through an evolution. LA mexican gangs is different because they was always occupied by those same Mexicans for generations and never started banging until the 1890's, and on top of that never evolved into anything bigger than the Mexican Mafia which was fairly a recent thing.

The Italians have a longer history of banging then all ethnicitys. The Gambinos-Genovese-Colombos can all trace their roots to street gangs and then onto mafias.
What I am saying is that THIS GANG <DOGTOWN 13> is Americas oldest longest living gang. They didnt chnge names-or streets. They are where they are TODAY, as they were in 1890. Their arent any other gangs NATIONWIDE even close to an unbroken history like this gang. If youve ever met any of these guys most have great grandparents who continued the gang and handed down storys-symbols to their children.
To say that they didnt originate MOST of what is done today as banging is just wrong. New York-has no history of writing like us-dressing like us and using the form of grey scale tattoo work along with the bandana banging gang signs throwing that are ALL INCORPORATED to make up what people consider gang life TODAY.
If you look at their gang graffiti going back to the 1940s.....which I posted above youll see the exact same method of street art today. This gang was one of several tomatoe gangs that William Dunne listed as having evolved. The other few are all extinct.
Alot of people say zootsuits created modern gang culture, but zootsuits were a form of dress used in the 1950s!.......this gang had been around over 60 years by then. In the 1960s, chicano activism, bitten of the black panthers....merged into alot of Mexican gangs.
To not give credit where its due is just misinformation. This gang can directly be traced to have influenced ---skate board culture----crips and bloods----Americas style of dress and fashion----street art, and music.
There are VERY FAMOUS trendsetters who say that Dogtown inspired them.........Stacy Peralta-Zephyr Skateboards. This group of white teens inspired All America into skateboarding by showing then a different way of dress-art that they had gotten from this gang. The chino like shoes (vans) work gear, simple chicano look they mimicked from Dogtown.
If your saying Americas youth arent big into skater gear that would just be false. NO EVIDENCE thsi is Americas oldest gang? Disprove it. The oldest gangs of Chicago still active are some 1960 inventions. New York? zippo. Boston.....none.
This is a gang who faced injunctions in 2010...........120 years after they first founded.

Tattooing was created by Africans. They had been marking their bodies-in ink since the begining of man. I AM NOT SAYING THAT.
The STYLE OF TATTOOING /.......mexican bangers invented had NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE> Thsi style was done in 1 color. Had shading-and 3d and was very intricate. No other culture in the world had ever tattooed in this manner. This style of tattooing known as "sombra" has changed all the worlds art. Go into any store today and youll see it on perfume bottles-shirts-purses-jeans etc.........
There are 3 forms of tattooing.........color ( the japanese have influenced this style more then anyone) black and grey (chicanos have influenced this style more then anyone) tribal (this is Maori culture)
But make no mistake before Chicano style inkwork had been incorporated into modern tattooing---tatttooing was extremely simple-and uncomplicated. It wasnt till the form of art known as Monochromatic black and grey touched Japanese-that Japan ese became so popular.
Art teachers point to Picassos use of shapes for transforming and making 3d-cubism-and even camoflague.
The art of tattooing is what it is today because of Chicanos. People are inking themselves again because Chicano style art. White convicts from California were tattooed by Mexicans while incarcerated and they then brought this art to other whites-nationwide.
The styles of writing-placements-shading-characters-figures. Even when other races tattoo their cultures symbols on them they are using either tribal-chicano or japanese art. By the form of lines-style of shading-or the placements.....

What I am getting at stoptheviolence is how you can trace modern banging culture right back to this gang. A white Irish kid from New York brought this gang-and alot of New York Italian gangster culture into Los Angelos and changed gang structure completely. Mexican kids now had Italian gangster names......such as PEEWEE, SHORTY, ROCCO, and dressed in Italian gangster gear because this Irish kid brought a New York style gang structure to West Coast Mexican kids.
The Mexican kids added their art into Italian New Yorker gangster culture and BAM......you have West Coast gangster life.
Their isnt a gang nationwide with close to that unbroken chain from New York in the 1800s to the streets of Los Angelos in 1890, to a gang injunction in the year 2010. It is BY FAR Americas oldest longest lived gang.

Lets just say for the sake of argument that all cultures worldwide have a few things........music.art.tattooing.
Cortez wrote to Spain telling them that when he landed in America, the Aztecs were possessed by demons and were worshipping the devil and had managed to draw the devil onto their skin with ink...........this was in the 1500s.
The oldest tattooed skin was found in Africa-as was the first use of musical instruments....BUT THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MODERN TATTOOING.
China or Africa have no influence in Modern tattooing. America shaped both Black and Mexican culture through their racism against our groups. Blacks developed-forms of speech-art-and music that the world had never known-here.
The artform of modern tattooing didnt start in Mexico. It started in America by Mexican kids who sought an identity and created a whole form of art borne out of oppression and racism. We arent using Tong art-tong style writing-Tong style clothing.

Tong gang in America influencing Italian Mafias....? are you kidding. They brought that with them from Italys , Sicilian Island. They had developed this structure because-Sicily was always teh first placed any invading army landed when seeking to control Europe.
Rape-injustice and murder were always followed by each and every arrival of foreigners into Sicily. The Sicilians created this mafia culture out of that. They then brought that with them when landing in America.
The oldest Tong gang in America if this is so, has had ZERO impact on modern American banging. You can take modern American banging and find it all with this gang. The structure-Italian. The art-Mexican. The music-African American.
Chinese people have zero presence in this discussion, nothing about the Tongs have shaped black-white or latino gangs. This is Americas oldest gang. It was started by an Irish kid who copied the style from New York Italians and was brought into the year 2012 by Mexicans.

what I said was modern american street culture is made up of Italian style gangs-with mexican style art and african american style music. we have lived close to eachother therefore we have all borrowed from eachother. You can see this by tracing this gangs history all the way back to New York. All these gangs who existed at one point and started gang culture have died out. THIS gang has not. They are where they were in 1890. The got hit with an injunction in the year 2010.

mayugastank wrote:sonofmongol wrote:mayugastank wrote:Tong gang in America influencing Italian Mafias....? are you kidding.
It was started by an Irish kid who copied the style from New York Italians and was brought into the year 2012 by Mexicans.
tongs and italian mafias have been doing tradings for a long time before they even came to america...
the chinese and italian mafias have the same structures...
how can that gang start african american music when african american music started in the 60s-70s? and if it has african american music then its obviously copying from them...
and the so called "art-mexican" is only in california... not in other states...
what I said was modern american street culture is made up of Italian style gangs-with mexican style art and african american style music. we have lived close to eachother therefore we have all borrowed from eachother. You can see this by tracing this gangs history all the way back to New York. All these gangs who existed at one point and started gang culture have died out. THIS gang has not. They are where they were in 1890. The got hit with an injunction in the year 2010.
gangs out of the southwestern states dont use mexican style art... since it dont even exist out of the southwest... cities like baton rouge or brooklyn dont use that art style.

Re: AMERICAS OLDEST GANG
Gangs out the Southwest dont use Mexican art? everyone uses our art........check out the show Jersey shore and youll see Mexican art plastered all over their bodies-their clothes. Calling themselves Guidos while wearing shirts that have symbolism to the Nuestra Familia-MAravilla-FRogtown and many more..........I cant go into any store today and not find about 75% of all clothing having some type of Chicano art.
New Yorkers dont use MExican Art? what about Maino....50 cent---all using a form of tattooing known as sombra....a style of art that NO ONE outside of US ever used even 15 years ago.
The fact is you cant really go into any spot today and not see throwbacks and incorporations of our art in Louis Vutton-Sean John-Dulce Gabana-Paco Chicano-Polo........Its what mexican bangers are known for. Their form of inkwork-their style of inkwork-and their way of drawing.
Its used throughout the WORLD now....with whites in Australia-Sweden-Ireland using our patterns without even knowing they are........
Much like evrything that has music today has some type of African American to it. Even when they sing the shit in Spanish......such as reggaeton.
Chinese people dont have any type or even a little bit of influence on American street gangs or culture.
American street culture is white-black-mexican. Mexicans dominate the styles of art-clothing today and blacks like always have dominated the music scene.
But this is just too long winded and I posted this thread with one thng in mind showing HOW American gangs got started and showing who is Americas oldest gang.

that dont look like mexican art at all... theres different styles of art they may look similar but its not the same...
the so called sombra art has european origins... as the mexican culture and people itself is european origins...
and not everybody on the east is like jersey shore... u dont see nobody having mexican style art... its usually tribal, chinese, and old english letters...
that tattoo that maino has is not mexican art... and 50 cent dont either...
polo and louie have mexican art? wtf... u must be seeing fake ones then cause the ones i see have no mexican art on them...
most people out of southwest states dont even know that mexican even bang... i didnt know till 3 years ago... and i found out cause of the rapper "the game" the mexicans on the east dont bang... they are usually targeted...
black americans invented everything in america that has to do with entertainment... and reggaeton is invented by puerto ricans...
american street culture is black and puerto rican nobody will think of mexican... when u say american street culture...

Re: AMERICAS OLDEST GANG
50 cent and Maino and almost all rappers and almost everything that has designs all have mexican art. No one outside of MExicans had ever drawn -tattooed or used those patterns. All those rappers were tattooed by mexicans-its why it looks so similiar to Mexican art.
The Game-Tyga-Maino-Bow Wow-Lil B-Kid Cuddy-Paul Wall-50 Cent-Eminem-Proof-Jr Smith-Wak Flaka-were all tattooed by Mexican Tattoo artists look it up. Mainly BOOG-CARTOON-JOSE LOPEZ and KAT VON D.........all who use the style SOMBRA.
The form of tattooing they have on them is called "sombra" it begun in the early 19th century and was used only by anywhere in the world.
Now go look at just about every Tshirt designed today and youll see that same artwork. Stars and Straps-Paco Chicano-Sean John-Rebel 8-Ed Hardy. Ed Hardy owned a tattoo shop in East los Angelos called " good time charlies tattoo land". HE was amazed at the form of art Mexican bangers were doing and using and begun bringing it into the mainstream and hiring people to do Album covers and more such as the covers for Carlos Santana-Cypress Park-and Sublime.
I grew up when only Mexicans got tattooed in this form of art and it wasnt till the mid 1990s that blacks were begining to use it. The vast majority of blacks who did were from either California or Texas where the art was strongest.
but since you know so much about mexicans you should be telling me
This is the style of of art Im talking about. I am spending too much time schooling you and you should just look it up yourself.

Re: AMERICAS OLDEST GANG
The title of the thread says AMERICAS OLDEST GANG. IT IS.
Now whether all of modern street culture started here is debatable but alot of it most of it did. DOGTOWN 13 is Americas oldest gang and it was researched HEAVILY by William Dunne in his book Gangs of LA.
There are also books on the gangs in NYC and those gangs started WAY BEFORE DOGTOWN13.
Gangs in NYC and CHITOWN started before gangs in East Los Angelos. Those gangs were all Irish and Italian.
BUT they are all gone now. Except for THIS GANG not a one of those gangs who trace their roots to modern banging all still here. DOGTOWN 13 IS!
The history of this gang SHOWS modern banging history and how modern banging started and what modern banging is.
Begun in 1890, by a New Yorker Irish kid. Who put Mexicans on and then Mexicans gradually took over and added their flair. By 1930-this gang was Mexican, and had actively participated in the zootsuit riots.
THERE IS NOT ONE GANG IN ALL OF USA................who even comes close to the history of thsi one gang. Its a fact. Modern banging roots are right here. Those roots were begun by white-kept alive by Mexicans and given flair by blacks.
To deny this is Americas oldest living gang, when its been reearched thru police records only an author could get ahold of......going back to the late 19th century, to the very first police report of gang crime? I mean what a BS. This is the gang in 1892 who started Los Angelos gang culture. PERIOD. Most everywhere else we would wonder what became of this gang.......but not here........we know where they are and we can go find their descandants in the same area. With the same monikers-and same gang name.
Also -the names of the tomatoe gangs are the names of Mexican gangs who disentigrated. Such as Diamond Street and Alpine Street...............these gangs died off in 1980! Almost 100 years after they started. Pomono 12 th street a gang still very MUCH active was named as a tomoatoe gang going back to the 1920s.

Re: AMERICAS OLDEST GANG
Are you saying Im lying?
What are Americas oldest gangs names'? Are they still active?when did they start?
Heres my list of a dozen still active older then any modern black gang by 40-60 years. Please prove me wrong.
White Fence (1909)-Avenues (1930)-Dogtown (1890)-P12 (1920)-El jardin (1930) 38th street (1920) Maravilla (1920) Big Hazard (1920) Bassett Grande (1930) Frogtown (1900) , Gerahty Lomas (1920), Harpies (1920)
12. out of probably 40 -or more CHICANO gangs older/closer to 100 years. If Los Angelos aint the epicenter of modern banging where is it? and what is modern gang banging what constitutes the dress-art and lifestyle of mdoern banging?
