LONG BEACH -- Fifteen-year-old Mao Eng was steps from his home in the early morning hours on Monday when his family awoke to a loud bang.

"I thought it was a car at first but then I heard the sound of my brother's voice," said 19-year-old Holly Eng. "He was calling for help. He was crying for our mom."

Holly ran outside and found her brother lying in the street about 30 feet from their home in the 400 block of Dawson Avenue near Fourth Street. Blood was seeping from a single gunshot wound to his stomach. The two assailants had fled on mountain bikes seconds before the sister arrived.

Mao's frantic parents were soon at his side. His father ripped off his own shirt and placed it over the wound to try to stop the blood. Mao was rushed to St. Mary Medical Center where he stayed on life support for two days before succumbing to his injuries.

Mao turned 15 on April 17. He is Long Beach's 18th murder victim so far this year, according to statistics from the Long Beach Police Department.

Police believe the killing is possibly gang-related and are asking for the public's help to find the killers. Mao was able to describe the suspects as two possibly Hispanic males on bicycles.

The son of Cambodian immigrants, Mao is the youngest boy of eight children. His parents, Houn Phan and Morn Chhun, fled the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s with their then four children and eventually settled into the small

three-bedroom apartment on Dawson Street, hoping for a better life.
Mao and his brothers and sisters grew up in the neighborhood and attended Burbank Elementary School, which is across the street from their home.

"We know everyone in the neighborhood," said sister Kelly Eng, 23.

Family members said Mao was an average teen who loved to skateboard and play with his puppy, Mimi. He dreamed of becoming a pro skater.

His best friend is a 19-year-old former gang member who is in a wheelchair after being shot and partially paralyzed in a gang-related incident, but Mao himself was not affiliated with gangs, family said. He preferred to stay peaceful.

"He got along with everyone," said brother Han Eng, 22. "He just wanted to skateboard."

As the youngest boy, Mao's parents weren't as strict with him as they had been with some of his older siblings, and the stubborn teen, who was attending a local continuation school, would sometimes stay out late at night despite his family's protests, his sister said.

On the night of the shooting, Mao was riding his skateboard back from his best friend's house in the area of 15th Street and Junipero Avenue at about 2:15 a.m. when the suspects snuck up from behind and shot him in the left side of his abdomen, family said.

The bullet "ricocheted" in his body, ripping through his stomach, spleen and intestines. Doctors pumped pints of blood into his system, and for a time on Tuesday morning he seemed to be stable, said sister Holly.

Brian Balderama, a 15-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, June 27, in the 1400 block of Gaviota Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Police responded to a report of a shooting about 6:25 a.m. and found Brian suffering from several gunshot wounds to the torso, according to a Long Beach Police news release.

Paramedics were called and Brian was taken to a local hospital, where he died three hours later, according to coroner's records.

Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Brian was at a friend's house when he was shot.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown; however, the incident is being investigated as possibly gang-related.

Anyone with information about the death of Brain Balderama is asked to contact Long Beach Police Department Homicide detectives Patrick O'Dowd and Terri Hubert at (562) 570-7244.

I am writing a few papers on this subject and have done thorough research. The Longos number under 400 members active-in prison......ICG R20 over 1000 between them with TRG and ABZ another 500............thats 3-1 or more.

This gang war isnt being fought on the West Side -North Side. Its largely fought in ESLB. For anyone to deny that the Longos arent notorious killers and havent done some serious banging is just gone. Their shouldnt be reason why they are still even around being as the numbers are skewed.

LBPD put longos numbers at 1000-1200 members in 2011(Im assuming with esl being the deepest) but everytime I go visit LB they're never around.I'm guessing they're either hiding out in the day time and only come out at night.You blame it on the injunction...but the injunction is against what..12-14 members of esl?

A TRG member was just charged for a killing spree a couple years ago.Maybe Asian gangs think esl is a joke now? esl only pop up once in a while like a jack in the box.Asian gangs are more worried about each other anyways its easy for them to kill each other because they no more about each other.

Not a single Longo has died in the last 5 years. Not one. Matter of fact-theyve dropped many of their enemies but havent gotten any soldiers killed. NAME ONE and Ill lay off. The insangs are said to number 700-800 members, the TRG 300 members, the R20 500 members. The East Side Longo 400 members. They are outgunned big time-they are outnumbered heavily. Especially since the North-West Side Longos are officially the same gang and not one quarter of the killings happen outside of the East Side. Also you cant just name people no one or nobody even mentions. what I am saying is backed by these reports.

A longo got shot and killed at the cherry apartments by abz, and one was also shot to death at rite aid exactly 5 years ago.

I remember that longo getting killed in front of the apt complex, it was at night, one shot to the head, he was standing in front of his apt complex. Dude was 18 years old, and if wasn't from longo he was from a click of longo. I heard it was an Asian that did it, but didnt know the gang and didnt care. Word in the apt complex was that the mexican dude was no good. His family was saying he was an angel of course. People on the street said he was always running up on people talking shit. Good job on that one.

From what those ABZ told me,that dude was a esl that recently moved to that apartment complex.
