ukegan police are investigating the death of a man found by a passerby about 3 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of 9th and Prescott streets in the north suburb.

"We're seeing signs of trauma, and we don't know what that means yet," said police Cmdr. Joe Florip. "Right now, this is a death investigation but with cause for concern."

While police heard reports of a shooting early Saturday, they have yet to confirm anything, he said.

At this time, no one is in custody in relation to the incident, Florip said. Police are awaiting an autopsy from the coroner's office.

Lake County Coroner Orlando Portillo said an autopsy was performed, but the office is unable to release any information pending the results of the police investigation.

"At this point we're not calling anything a homicide," he said earlier. "We may be looking at foul play. We may not."

Florip said police may have more information Sunday. But as of Saturday evening, the matter remained a death investigation, and police were not releasing any further information.

Waukegan already has seen one homicide in the new year. Roberto Romero, 23, allegedly shot Elpidia Munoz-Garcia in the face in front of her 9-year-old daughter at a Waukegan bar early Friday. He was arrested about 2 a.m. upon returning to Buenos Bar on Franklin Street after the shooting.

Romero, of the 400 block of South Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Waukegan, is charged with first-degree murder and being held in lieu of a $3 million bail.
