2 dead, 7 wounded in shootings on West and South sides

Two men were killed and seven other people were wounded, including a 16-year-old boy, in shootings on the West and South sides overnight, police said.

• In the Austin neighborhood, two men were standing with a group of people in the 1000 block of North Lawler Avenue when someone fired into the crowd and hit them, according to Police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines.

Quincey Simmons, 18, of the 1100 block of North Leamington Aveue, was dead on the scene, according to the medical examiner's office. The other man, also 18, was shot in the thigh and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was good.

• Another fatal shooting occurred about 11:10 p.m. Tuesday in the 1200 block of South Kolin Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side, according to police.

Victor Coleman, 32, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at 11:58 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the medical examiner's office. Coleman lived in the 1300 block of South Kildare Avenue, the medical examiner's office said.

The victim was walking when someone came out of a gangway, took out a handgun and began shooting, according to police. The victim was hit several times, police said.

• In the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side, a 16-year-old boy was shot in the hip at 9:45 p.m. in the 8800 block of South Wood Street, police said.

The teen said a car drove past his home and someone inside it fired three times. The teen was stable at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Gaines said.

• At 10:13 p.m. on the Far South Side, a 26-year-old man was in a car in the 8400 block of South Buffalo Avenue, waiting for his girlfriend, according to Gaines. Two gunmen approached from behind and started shooting, hitting the man several times.

He was stable at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to Gaines.

• In the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, two gunmen walked up to a 24-year-old man in the 5600 block of South Bishop Street around 10:30 p.m. and opened fire, hitting him twice in the lower back, said Gaines.

The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition had stabilized.

• About a half an hour later, an armed robbery in the West Englewood neighborhood left two men in their 30s wounded.

The men were standing in an alley in the 2100 block of West 64th Street around 11:05 p.m. when a group of people confronted them and announced a robbery. The men, 38 and 37, tried to run away but they were shot. The younger man suffered a gunshot wound to his buttocks and was stable at Christ Medical Center, while the other man was shot in the hip and also taken to Christ, Gaines said.

Four persons of interest were being questioned in this case, according to Gaines.

• An early morning shooting in the West Garfield Park neighborhood sent a 20-year-old man to a hospital. Gaines said the man was walking down the street near Madison Street and Kilbourn Avenue at 12:20 a.m. when a gunman announced a robbery.

The man tried to run and the gunman shot him in the leg. He was taken to Stroger, where he was listed in good condition.
