NYC DIRTIEST CITY

This stinks!

New York has been named the dirtiest out of 35 American metropolitan areas by the out-of-towners who read Travel + Leisure magazine.

Tourists cited New York’s garbage-piled sidewalks and funky odors to shove Gotham to the top of the trash heap in the poll, which is part of the magazine’s annual America’s Favorite Cities survey.

The magazine polled 50,000 people online, but the tourists were the harshest.

You’d think New Yorkers would be quick to defend the capital of the world — but the nose knows; city residents ranked our rankness as the second-worst in the nation, behind, obviously, Baltimore.

“New York is beyond nasty!” said Nevillyn Parsons, 42, a city resident who recently snapped a photo of a rat rummaging through garbage outside a Brooklyn courthouse.

Of course, Mayor Bloomberg covered the stench of defeat in a floral spray of spin.

“Sounds like the people in this survey haven't been here in a long while,” said mayoral spokeswoman Julie Wood.

The city’s 50 million tourists last year, she added, “saw for themselves that the city is cleaner than ever.”

A recent Sanitation Department report gave the city’s streets a 95% cleanliness rating, up from 70% in the 1970s. But nonnative New Yorkers weren’t buying that particular bridge Monday.

Other cities “don't have the same smell of (urine) and the rodent problem that you have here,” said Derek Snow, 35, who moved to New York from Boston. “But if you want the extremely awesome, you have to take the extremely bad.”

New Yorkers may be slightly more immune to their city’s grit and grime — and the occasional skittering rodent — as they slog to their jobs every day.

But they’re not so thrilled once they get there. New York ranked only 17th in a separate survey of the 20 “happiest cities” for young professionals ranked by CareerBliss.com.

Six of the top 10 happiest cities for workers are in California, the website claimed. With Erin Durkin

S.I would be the cleanest behind manhattan because is the least populous and got a larger ratio of whites to blacks than anywhere else in the city. :tiphat:

Thats a Gambian Pouched Rat which is a different species then the sewer rat.A rat like that is more tame and you can keep it as a pet.

The African Giant Pouched Rat is generally considered to be the Gambian Pouched Rat [Cricetomys gambianu] which has been separated as a species from the Southern Giant Pouched Rat
Appearance

The Giant African Rat has a long tail, which is bare with a white tip. The body is covered with buff-grey, relatively long fur whereas the under parts are slightly paler. Front hands are white. Face is characterised by long dark whiskers. An adult measures 750 mm from the nose to the tip of the tail, and the tail is about 410 mm long. An average male weighs about 1.3 kg and the female 1.2 kg. Small eyes are surrounded by a black eye-patch.
Diet

The African Giant Rat is an omnivorous rodent which feeds on a wide range of food items. Its diet includes insects, termites, fruit and vegetable matter. They have cheek pouches in which they carry food and other items intended for storage.
Breeding

After a gestation period of 27 days, females give birth to litters of two to four altricial pups. The African Giant Rat breeds mostly during summer. Young first leave the nest to forage at the age of six weeks, and finally leave the nest at the age of three months.
Behaviour

The Giant Pouched Rats are strictly nocturnal and mostly solitary, except when breeding. The home range of adult males and female rats overlaps. The African Giant Rat is adapted to forests and forest scrub with a rainfall in excess of 800 mm per year.
Where they are found

There are a number of species in this African rodent genus, of which only Cricetomys ansorgei marginally occurs In South Africa. Its occurrence is restricted to the northern parts of the Northern Province.
Field Notes

The Giant Pouched Rats are trained to sniff out land mines in a number of countries in Africa. Easier to train than dogs, the rats are also less expensive to keep.

The Rats can become an infestation in areas where rubbish is strewn and left and there are reported incidents of these Giant Pouched Rats eating human babies and sleeping adults.
