Fatal Eisenhower Expy. Shooting Was Gang Retaliation, Police Say

By Josh McGhee | May 17, 2017 2:38pm | Updated on May 17, 2017 3:02pm

CHICAGO — Two people have been arrested in connection to a shooting on the Eisenhower Expy. that left a man dead in September in what authorities say was a fight between gang members over an earlier murder.

Terreon Johnson, 27, of Woodale, and Irell Dickens, 29, of Chicago, were charged with one count each of first-degree murder by the Cook County state's attorney on May 10, according to State Police.

Around noon on Sept. 29, Devon Almon, 24, was fatally shot while traveling east on the Eisenhower Expy. at Central Avenue. He was a passenger in a car being driven by a friend and was just leaving the Maybrook Courthouse in Maywood when the shooting occurred, police said.

The driver was not injured in the shooting and drove Almon to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Johnson was identified as the shooter, police said.

Johnson had organized a group of people to follow and kill Almon in retaliation for the killing of one of Johnson's friends in July 2016. Almon was a documented "New Breed" gang member, and Johnson is a documented member of the "Traveling Vice Lords" gang, police said.

Several people witnessed the shooting and were able to give a description of the car and partial plates. On Sept. 30, Johnson was taken into custody as police served a search warrant for his garage, where the car was located, but he was released for lack of evidence, police said. Further investigation led to charges.

According to authorities, Almon was the target of an assassination attempt twice before. Once on July 28, which was never reported to the Chicago Police Department, and on Aug. 4, when he was followed from the Maybrook Courthouse and shot at while in a fast food drive-thru. That shooting was reported to Bolingbrook police, police said.

Bond was set at $2 million for both Johnson and Dickens.
